Reports From Spain: Chelsea ready to boost squad with £52m signing

According to Spanish daily Fichajes, Chelsea have set their sights on signing gifted Canadian striker Jonathan David from French team LOSC Lille in order to address their goal-scoring problems.

Despite David’s reputation having somewhat cooled down over the past 12 months, his performances have not faded.

The Canadian international has shown his goal scoring abilities consistently in the Ligue 1.

Chelsea have plans to sign a new striker in the summer with the Blues targeting Ivan Toney and Victor Osimhen.

However, latest reports have suggested that the Lille striker is also being eyed by the Premier League club.

As per the source, Chelsea are now a legitimate contender for David, as they want to sign the Canadian in the summer.

A prospective deal may cost as much as £52 million, which is a rather high fee.

This season, the 24-year-old has scored 24 goals and provided seven assists in 42 outings for the Ligue 1 team.

He would therefore undoubtedly give Chelsea a much-needed presence upfront.

Chelsea lack depth and quality in attack

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino currently has the option of playing Nicolas Jackson in attack but the former Villareal striker has struggled to adapt to English football.

His disappointing performance in the FA Cup semifinal against Man City and the Premier League match against Arsenal served as another reminder that the Blues need a striker ahead of next season.

Taking everything into account, the Blues may have to enter the market once more this summer in an effort to sign a player who can solve their obvious goal-scoring problems.

Only Palmer has performed well for Chelsea this season

This season, Cole Palmer has shouldered the responsibility of scoring goal for the Premier League club. However, he is not an out and out striker.

Chelsea have scored less goals than Newcastle United and Tottenham this season, both teams who have reliable attackers who can finish the chances created.

In order to bridge the gap between them and the teams ahead of them in the Premier League standings, the Blues would need to sign a reliable goal scorer.
